More than 31 million prescriptions for antidepressants were issued in 2006- a 6% rise on the year before.. In particular prescriptions for a group of drugs know as SSRIs, which include Prozac, rose by 10% last year from 14.7m to 16.2m, and there have been fears that the drugs are linked to suicidal thoughts and self-harm in some cases.
This depressing news appears at a time when Mind the mental health charity is urging people to find alternative methods of dealing with depressions such as ecotherapy - getting outdoors and getting active in a green environment- guided self-help or psychological therapies.

STRESS CAN LEAD TO IRREGULAR OR MISSED PERIODS.
The stresses of everyday life can cause women to become infertile.
A build up of tension can prevent a woman from having her period and therefore from conceiving a baby, US scientists have found.
But relaxation therapies can help women become pregnant in up to 80% of cases!
The US research team found that it's not only traumatic life events, but the gradual drip drip accumulation of small stresses and pressures allowed to build up without giving vent to them that can cause a lack of monthly periods and ovulation which was previously linked to under nutrition and excessive exercise.
"In fact the collection of small stresses can be worse for fertility than one big stress" says Professor Sarah Berga from Emory University in Atlanta.
In her studies, she found that relaxation therapy was a good way to reduce stress.
A staggering 80% of the women studied, suffering infertility for more than six months and receiving Cognitive Behaviour Therapy consisting of coaching on nutrition, exercise and ways to reduce stress over a 20 week period , started ovulating again!
Learning to manage stress better using a vast range of available therapies can help restore ovulation in up to four out of five cases of stress related infertility! These include relaxing baths, aromatherapy, massage, music therapy, colour therapy, better breathing, meditation and yoga, natural supplements, room ionisers, mood lighting, reflexology and self help CD's.

CANNED OXYGEN. OPUR HANDY PORTABLE CANISTERS.
Nipping off for a quick breather used to mean going for a brisk walk, but not any more!
Now you can just pick up a canister of OPUR and inhale from the comfort of your chair.
This compact, portable oxygen supply with its own built in inhaler cap, releases the gas one breath at a time. Not just for urban dwellers living with growing pollution and carbon monoxide emissions, extra oxygen can benefit everybody by increasing brain power by up to 20% according to researchers at the University of Northumbria Human Cognitive Neuroscience Unit.
While this might not translate directly into tangible benefits, a breath of fresh air is likely to make you feel good!
